Not wanting to be outdone by Super Bowl LI's hyped slate of ads, SKC released its own gem on social media Sunday afternoon.

They’re a tradition as synonymous with American culture as apple pie and large portion sizes: Super Bowl commercials. While millions tune in and go to parties every year to see the action in the big game, a significant portion only partake for the commercials and Aunt Pamela’s casserole.

Enter Major League Soccer’s Sporting Kansas City. Not wanting to be outdone by Super Bowl LI’s hyped slate of ads, the club released its own gem on social media Sunday afternoon — a parody of Coca-Cola’s famous 1979 commercial in which a young boy offers Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle “Mean” Joe Greene a Coke in the stadium tunnel.

The SKC version features defender Seth Sinovic in full fanboy mode as he sheepishly offers “Mean” Ike Opara his refreshing carbonated beverage. Channeling Greene, Opara chugs it and tosses his jersey to an elated Sinovic.

The kicker? Technically, the parody is still considered a “football” ad. Well played, SKC.
